Location: Annapolis, MD
Position: Full-Time, On-Site
Pay: $40–$45/hour, ($83,000–$94,000/annually) based on experience

Responsibilities

Provides specialized instruction through a continuum of services to address the needs of students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing. Nature of work may include providing and coordinating services for children and families in a variety of daily settings: conferring with parents regarding progress/problems in the acquisition of skills; teaching communication (total, sign, and/or cued), as appropriate. Plans, develops, selects and modifies instructional materials and lessons while considering the language and communication needs of students and their families. Provides support and training to school staff to increase opportunities for students to access, participate in and progress in the general education curriculum. May supervise students in a variety of school-related environments.

 

Essential Duties

  • Designs, develops, and adapts lessons, assignments, and instructional materials for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, including support for preschoolers in integrated school or childcare settings, and coordination of inter- and intra-agency services.

  • Creates and implements staff awareness and orientation programs.

  • Utilizes a variety of teaching strategies to effectively deliver content.

  • Establishes a classroom environment that promotes intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth.

  • Maintains classroom discipline to support effective learning.

  • Schedules and participates in conferences with parents and students as needed to discuss progress and address concerns.

  • Actively participates in staff meetings, professional development, and special committees.

  • Contributes to planning instructional goals, objectives, and teaching methods.

  • Performs additional duties as assigned within the same or lower classification.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of school organization, goals and objectives with special emphasis on teaching techniques related to providing instruction to students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing.
  • Knowledge of materials, current trends and research in field of specialization.
  • Knowledge of varied language and communication modes and methods used by students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing.
  • Knowledge and facility of signing and interpreting.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in technical areas of instruction.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively.
  • Ability to interact effectively with students, staff and parents.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with diverse communities and develop outreach strategies to encourage parental involvement in student learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and engage diverse parents/guardians with varied communication styles, levels of skill and experience to support their child’s education experience.
  • Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.
  • Job requires direct in-person provision of service, therefore punctual, regular and predictable attendance is essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing from a regionally accredited college or university required.
  • Master's Degree in Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing from a regionally accredited college or university preferred.

Experience

  • Experience teaching the deaf and/or hard of hearing preferred.

Language Requirements

  • Sign Language American Sign Language preferred.
